How to compress an image
Click Choose image (or drag a photo onto the box) and pick a JPG, PNG or WebP file. The tool compresses it instantly and shows the original and compressed versions side by side with their file sizes and the percentage saved. Move the quality slider to balance size against sharpness โ 60โ80% is usually a good range for photos โ then press Download compressed image.
Your images never leave your device
Compression happens inside your browser using the built-in Canvas image encoder. The file is not uploaded to ToolNest or any other server, so it is safe to use for personal photos, ID scans or client work. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working.
Choosing the right format
JPG is best for photos. WebP is usually 25โ35% smaller than JPG at similar quality and also keeps transparency, so it is the default when you compress a PNG. PNG is lossless: the quality slider does not change PNG output, so use it only when you need a pixel-perfect copy. If a compressed file comes out larger than your original (common with images that were already heavily optimised), the tool shows a clear warning so you can keep the original instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is the image compressor free?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing happens in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why is my compressed file bigger than the original?
Some images are already highly compressed, or PNG output is chosen for a photo. Lower the quality or switch to WebP or JPG. The tool warns you whenever the output is larger.
Does compression remove photo metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the browser drops EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, which is good for privacy when sharing photos online.
What is the largest file I can compress?
Files up to 50 MB and about 50 megapixels. Very large images may be slow on older phones.
